Unterbrechung Drewen
Unterbrechung Drewen – Unterbrechung Drewen (A Break in Drewen) was created in collaboration with the nine remaining teenagers of Drewen, a village in the former East Germany (DDR) situated about 100 km north of Berlin with a total population of 243 inhabitants. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Drewen witnessed a dramatic increase in migration to neighbouring cities. Since the closure of the village youth club there is not much left for the teenagers to do except hang around at the bus stop, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. Now and then one of them races up and down the road on an old motorcycle. For this project, the kids were asked to take part in a photo shoot, directly opposite the bus stop. They brought a motorbike and a blue sports car with a booming stereo. They could act and dress how they liked. What we brought in were small metal foot pieces to stand on to pose on different spots on the wall. In this way they were (literally) able to have a fresh look at their daily environment from a totally different point of view. The title of the piece has been made by Rico, one of the boys; He called it “Unterbrechung Drewen “ which means something like a break (from boredom) in Drewen. The work was presented as a slide and video projection at the Internationales Kunst Forum Drewen, situated between the bus stop and the old barn where the photo shoot took place.
The project was part of the Brandenburgische Kunsttage, a yearly art festival organised by Internationales Kunstforum Drewen and this year curated by Christophe Tannert.
